Google launches ImageFX, an AI-powered image generator

Google has recently launched a new tool called ImageFX, a standalone AI text-to-image generator that is powered by Imagen 2, a state-of-the-art image model developed by Google’s DeepMind team¹²³. ImageFX allows users to create and edit images with a simple text prompt, and then modify them with expressive chips, a novel feature that lets users experiment with different keywords and styles⁴.

ImageFX is part of Google’s growing family of tools for generative AI, which also includes MusicFX for music generation and TextFX for stylized text³. Imagen 2 is also integrated into other Google products and services, such as Google Ads, Duet AI in Workspace, and SGE (Search Generative Experience) in Google Image Search⁴.

Google claims that ImageFX produces “the highest quality images yet” compared to previous models, and that it can handle complex and diverse prompts, such as “a photorealistic depiction of a dog riding a surfboard” or “a surreal painting of a city in the clouds”³⁴. ImageFX also has safeguards to limit problematic outputs, such as violent, offensive, or sexually explicit content, and to prevent the generation of images of named people⁴.

To combat the risk of ImageFX or any tool with Imagen 2 as its base model from being used to create misinformation or deepfake images, Google has added SynthID, a technique that embeds a hidden watermark in generated content that can be used to identify the artificial origins of the image³⁴. Google also provides insights in “About this image” feature, which shows if an image may have been generated with Google’s AI tools when users come across it in Google Search or Chrome⁴.

ImageFX is available through AI Test Kitchen, Google’s web app for experimental AI projects. Users can try it out for free and share their feedback with Google. Google says that ImageFX is designed for experimentation and creativity, and that it hopes to inspire users to explore the possibilities of AI image generation⁴.
