Fans of the 1988 cult classic Beetlejuice have been waiting for a sequel for decades, and now their wish is finally coming true. Director Tim Burton has revealed the official title and poster for the upcoming film, which will hit theaters on September 6, 2024.

The sequel, titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is a clever nod to the original film’s premise, where the titular character, a mischievous ghost played by Michael Keaton, can be summoned by saying his name three times. The poster shows a pair of hands holding a ticket number, reminiscent of the afterlife waiting room scene from the first film, with the date “09,06,24” written in green.

Burton confirmed the completion of filming in an Instagram post in November 2023, after the production was delayed by the SAG-AFTRA strike that lasted for several months. He thanked everyone involved and expressed his excitement for the project, which he said was “kind of like going back to why I liked making movies” in an interview with The Independent.

The sequel will see the return of Keaton as Beetlejuice, as well as Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara as Lydia and Delia Deetz, respectively. They will be joined by new cast members, such as Monica Bellucci, who is dating Burton, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, and Jenna Ortega, who will play Lydia’s daughter.

The plot details are still under wraps, but Dafoe revealed in a Variety interview that he will play “a police officer in the afterlife” who was formerly a B-movie action star. Ortega, who previously worked with Burton on the Netflix series Wednesday, said that she had “a lot of fun” filming the sequel and that she was “honored” to be part of the iconic franchise.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is one of the most anticipated films of 2024, according to a Fandango survey of more than 8,000 ticket-buyers. The film will be released in the same time frame as previous Warner Bros. hits, such as It and The Nun, and will face competition from other big titles, such as Deadpool 3 and Avatar 2.
